The A's held their third annual Dog Day at The Park at McAfee Coliseum, presented by AvoDerm & Nylabone, on Friday, August 15, 2008. Fans were invited to bring their dogs to the park and help cheer on their home team as the A's beat the White Sox 6-4 thanks to a pinch-hit walk-off home run by A's catcher Kurt Suzuki.
Fans were invited to a pre-game "Pup Rally" in the A's parking lot, hosted by A's post-game radio host Robert Buan, where each Pup received a goodie bag containing an A's bandana, samples of dry dog food from AvoDerm and a dog treat courtesy of Nylabone. The rally featured games, raffle prizes and contests including a best dressed and best trick contest as well as a contest for the dog that looks most like its owner. Gibson, the Guinness World Record's tallest dog, also made an appearance at the rally and took the mound for the first pitch.
The A's raised over $2,000 from the purchase of Dog Day tickets, all of which was donated to Dogs4Diabetics, a non-profit organization that trains medical-alert service dogs to detect hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) in humans and alert their partner or other family member of the situation. The A's Community Fund donated $1,000 as well and Central Garden & Pet contributed the remaining amount to bring the overall donation to $12,000.
