This unique program is designed especially for high school students aspiring to pursue a career as a sportswriter. Students research, check facts and write an essay on their career as a journalist. Winners travel to Progressive Field to observe batting practice, conduct interviews with selected players and take in the game from a reporter's perspective.
Additionally, the overall winner of the essay contest has his work displayed in the Education section of the The Plain Dealer and the team website.
In recognition of his achievements both on and off the field throughout his 11-year career with the Cleveland Indians, Sandy Alomar Jr., was inducted into the Indians Hall of Fame as the 33rd player in club history to be so honored. Sandy was the heart and soul of championship teams and he shared those leadership skills while participating in numerous community outreach initiatives benefiting the youth of NE Ohio. To honor Sandy's commitment to the Cleveland Indians and the youth of our area, the Cleveland Indians, in conjunction with Major League Baseball have created the Sandy Alomar Jr. Scholarship Award. This award recognizes a graduating Senior from St. Martin dePorres High School who excels in academics and community service.
Each year on April 15th, the Cleveland Indians join Major League Baseball by celebrating the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier throughout baseball. On this date in 1947, Robinson became the first African-American to play for a Major League Baseball team. In honor of Robinson, the players pay a special tribute to Robinson by wearing an Indians #42 jersey. Additional activities include a special on-field presentation to honor diversity suppliers, the legacy of Jackie Robinson, and the Jackie Robinson Foundation. The Jackie Robinson Foundation was established to help young people overcome obstacles, as it awards scholarships annually to full-time college students
