A's Reinstate Ellis from DL; Place Chavez on DL
05/22/2010 1:52 PM ET

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's reinstated second baseman Mark Ellis from the 15-day disabled list today and placed designated hitter Eric Chavez on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 21 with neck spasms.

Ellis was batting .323 in eight games with Oakland before he was placed on the disabled list April 21 with a strained left hamstring. He went 2 for 9 (.222) with a RBI during a three-game rehab assignment with Single-A Stockton and Triple-A Sacramento.

Chavez was batting .234 with a home run and 10 RBI in 33 games with Oakland. He started 29 games at designated hitter, all against right-handed pitchers, and his 33 games played were two more than his combined total of 31 from the previous two seasons. This is his seventh career stint on the DL, his fifth in the last four years. The A's have now used the disabled list 13 times this year and 77 times since the start of the 2007 season. Oakland currently has seven players on the DL and has had at least five players on the DL all year.
