OAKLAND -- When the New York Yankees acquired Alex Rodriguez and announced that they were moving him to third base, A's third baseman Eric Chavez assumed his three-year reign as the American League's Gold Glove winner at the position was all but over.

"He's a Gold Glove shortstop," Chavez said during Spring Training. "You think he can't win one at third?"

Perhaps he can some day, but not this year. Chavez on Tuesday was announced as the winner yet again, giving him four awards in a row.

"He deserves it," said A's pitcher Mark Mulder. "He's phenomenal down there. Every ball hit his way, you almost don't even look. You know he's going to make the play."

Chavez finished the season with a .968 fielding percentage (13 errors in 402 total chances), which was the second-best mark in the AL. He ranked second among AL third basemen in total chances and double plays (31) and tied for second in assists (276). Chavez committed six errors over his first 40 games and then had a career high 47-game errorless streak from May 21 to Aug. 22, which equaled the sixth-longest errorless streak by a third baseman in Oakland history.
