OAKLAND -- When Tim Hudson checked his cell phone Saturday night, the two calls he'd missed were from Mark Mulder and a Bay Area reporter.
It had been 48 hours since Hudson was traded from Oakland to Atlanta, and he'd already spoken to the reporter about it twice, so he instantly came to a conclusion.
"I thought, 'Man, they traded someone else already,'" Hudson said. "I just figured Mulder was calling to tell me who it was."
Turns out that was exactly what Mulder was doing. But it never occurred to Hudson that Mulder might be calling about himself.
"Not in a million years," Hudson admitted. "Didn't cross my mind for a second."
To say Hudson was surprised by the news that the A's had sent Mulder to St. Louis in exchange for pitchers Dan Haren and Kiko Calero and minor league catcher Daric Barton is an understatement.
To say that Mulder was surprised would put you in the Understatement Hall of Fame.
