MARLINS 3, RED SOX 2
at Jupiter, Fla.
Monday, March 3

Red Sox at the plate: Jacoby Ellsbury gave the Sox an early spark, reaching base in the first inning before driving in the team's first run on a sacrifice fly in the second. The Sox mustered only three hits in all, with Kevin Youkilis the only regular starter to pick up a hit.

Marlins at the plate: Luis Gonzalez took advantage of Sox reliever Dan Kolb's wildness, drawing a bases-loaded walk to put the Marlins on the board in the fourth inning. Catcher Matt Treanor then put them ahead with a solo home run in the fifth, and outfielder Alexis Gomez finally gave them the lead once again with an RBI single in the seventh.

Red Sox on the mound: Starter Kyle Snyder used two double plays to keep the Marlins scoreless for three innings. Kolb relieved him but lasted only one-third of an inning, walking three batters and allowing one single. Sox prospect Justin Masterson allowed the go-ahead run in his two innings to take the loss.

Marlins on the mound: Making the first start of his Marlins career, Andrew Miller pitched a wild three innings, walking five batters, hitting another and throwing only 23 of his 56 pitches for strikes. His stuff was fine -- Miller struck out three batters and didn't allow a single hit -- but the control problems marred his afternoon. Closer Kevin Gregg added a perfect inning in relief, while Lee Gardner pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 2-2, Marlins 5-1

Up next: The Marlins remain at Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday to take on the Mets, with lefty Mark Hendrickson starting opposite Mets right-hander John Maine. Chris Volstad, Matt Lindstrom, Justin Miller and Logan Kensing are all also scheduled to pitch for the Marlins in the 1:05 p.m. ET game.
