Mariners at the plate: First baseman Bryan LaHair set up a two-run second inning with a one-out double to right field, and drove in a run and scored in the ninth. Right fielder Brad Wilkerson singled and walked in his two at-bats. Center fielder Ichiro Suzuki, who grounded out twice and walked, is looking for his first hit this spring.

Cubs at the plate: Alex Cintron, playing third base in place of injured Aramis Ramirez, doubled home second baseman Luis Figueroa in the sixth inning to put the Cubs ahead to stay. Designated hitter Jake Fox tripled, doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, while Ronny Cedeno had three hits.

Mariners on the mound: Left-handed starter Jarrod Washburn worked three scoreless innings in his first Cactus League start, surrendering four hits. He struck out one and hit a batter. Right-hander Joe Woerman surrendered two runs on two hits in two innings.

Cubs on the mound: Starter Jon Lieber worked the first two innings and was nicked for two runs in the second inning. Right-handed reliever Jeff Samardzija, a fifth-round Draft choice in 2006, tossed two scoreless innings to get the win. The only blemish on his outing was a leadoff walk. Bob Howry allowed three runs on five hits in the ninth.
