BREWERS 6, PADRES 2
at Peoria, Ariz.
Friday, March 14

Padres at the plate: Chase Headley hit a 400-foot solo homer, his third, in the third inning. Callix Crabbe added a solo homer, his first, in the seventh.

Brewers at the plate: Joe Dillon and Mike Cameron both singled and scored in the first. Bill Hall tripled and scored in the fourth. Prince Fielder's solo homer in the sixth made it 4-1, Brewers. It was Fielder's first home run this spring. Cameron, a former Padres outfielder, was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Padres on the mound: Randy Wolf yielded four hits and three runs (two earned) in four innings, while neither walking nor striking out a batter. Adam Bass struck out two in one perfect inning. The Padres defense hurt the cause by committing four errors.

Brewers on the mound: Claudio Vargas continued his strong spring by allowing three hits and one run in five innings, striking out three, as he improved to 3-0 with a 2.40 ERA.

Cactus League records: Padres 8-7; Brewers 11-6.

Padres up next: The Padres will start Wade LeBlanc against the Oakland Athletics at Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. PT. The Padres also face the Dodgers in Beijing, China, at 10 p.m.

Brewers up next: It's Dave Bush's and Manny Parra's turn to fight for the starting rotation on Saturday, when the Brewers host the Royals at Maryvale Baseball Park at 3:05 p.m. CT. Bush and Parra were both on the list to work five innings or as many 80 pitches in their fourth Spring Training appearances. It turns out that both teams are looking to stretch out their pitchers (Gil Meche is slated to throw six innings for Kansas City) so an agreement was struck to play as many as 10 innings, regardless of the score.

"I don't know if we'll have umpires," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "But we're going to go into it playing 10."

With Bush and Parra eating all the innings in the "A" game, relievers Salomon Torres, Derrick Turnbow and Eric Gagne were scheduled to work in a Triple-A game against the A's. It's Torres' first game action of Spring Training.
