OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s claimed right-handed pitcher Rich Thompson off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels, the club announced today. A corresponding roster move will be announced once Thompson reports to Oakland.
Thompson appeared in two games for the Angels this year, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk in 2.1 innings for a 15.43 ERA. After tossing a scoreless inning of relief April 7 against Kansas City, he allowed four runs in 1.1 innings in his last outing April 12 at Minnesota when he took the loss. The 27-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment April 14.
A native of Australia, Thompson was originally signed by the Angels as a free agent Feb. 13, 2002. He made his Major League debut in 2007 and has spent parts of each season since then with Los Angeles. His most extensive action came last year when he posted a 3.00 ERA in 44 relief appearances. Thompson is 3-4 with a 4.24 ERA in 81 career appearances, all in relief.
