Rockies acquire RHP Mitchell Boggs from St. Louis Cardinals
Club designates RHP Joe Gardner for assignment
DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Mitchell Boggs from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for one international signing bonus slot (fourth slot). Boggs will be optioned to Double-A Tulsa. To create a spot on the 40-man roster for Boggs, the Rockies have designated right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner for assignment.
Boggs, 29, began the season on St. Louis's Opening Day roster and made 18 appearances before being optioned to Triple-A Memphis. In those 18 games, he went 0-3 with two saves and had an ERA of 11.05 (14.2 ip, 18 er). With Memphis, he has appeared in 18 games while making three starts going 0-2 with a 5.70 ERA (23.2 ip, 15 er). In 2012, Boggs led the National League with 34 holds while going 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA (73.1 ip, 18 er) in a career-high 78 games. The Dalton, Georgia native has appeared in 232 career Major League games with 15 starts and has gone 13-15 with six saves and a 4.15 ERA (308.0 ip, 142 er).
Gardner, 25, has spent the entire season with Double-A Tulsa and appeared in 13 games. He went 3-2 with a 7.01 ERA (25.2 ip, 20 er). He owns a career minor league record of 34-27 with one save and a 3.84 ERA in 94 career games, 76 starts. Gardner was acquired from Cleveland on July 31, 2011 along with left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz and infielder Matt McBride in exchange for right-handed pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez.
The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
