Two video reviews don't go Giants' way
Gentry's plunking stands after challenge; Pence remains out in seventh
OAKLAND -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy unsuccessfully challenged a fifth-inning call that gave the Oakland A's a leadoff batter on base in Monday night's Interleague game between the cross-bay rivals.
Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong threw a 1-2 pitch to Craig Gentry, who checked his swing as the ball veered inside. Plate umpire Paul Nauert awarded Gentry first base, saying that the pitch hit him. Bochy requested a video review, believing that the ball struck Gentry's bat. Ultimately, it was determined that the ruling on the field would stand, and Gentry came around to score the game's first run.
The Giants also came up short in a seventh-inning review requested by crew chief Angel Hernandez, whose out ruling on Hunter Pence was confirmed. Pence had tapped a grounder that was bobbled by third baseman Josh Donaldson, who rushed a throw to first base that pulled Stephen Vogt off the bag. But a review proved that Vogt kept his foot on the base long enough to record the out as he received Donaldson's throw.
