A's acquire Kennedy, Witasick
Byrnes, Quintanilla dealt to Rockies

OAKLAND, Calif. -- In the team's second trade of the day, the Oakland A's announced the club has acquired pitchers Joe Kennedy and Jay Witasick from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for outfielder Eric Byrnes, minor league infielder Omar Quintanilla and cash considerations.
Kennedy, a 26-year old left-hander, was 4-8 with a 7.04 ERA in 16 starts for Colorado this season. The Rockies managed to score just 12 runs in his eight losses this season and were shutout on three occasions. He posted a 3-1 record with a 7.09 ERA (31er in 39.1ip) in seven starts at Coors Field and was 1-7 with a 7.01 ERA (41er in 52.2ip) in his nine road starts. Kennedy, who spent three seasons (2001-03), has compiled a 31-46 record with a 4.95 ERA in 125 Major League appearances, including 115 starts, dating back to the 2001 season.
Witasick, a 33-year old right-hander, signed a minor league contract with the Rockies on April 9 after being released by Baltimore. He was 0-4 with a 2.52 ERA in 32 relief appearances for Colorado serving primarily as the club's set-up man, appearing in the seventh inning or later in 29 of his 32 outings. He held opponents to a .209 batting average and struck out 40 batters in 35.2 innings of work. His strikeout total ranked tied for 11th among all National League relievers. Witasick allowed just six earned runs in his last 29 appearances (33.0ip) and walked just nine batters during that stretch, two intentionally, while holding the opposition to a .185 (22-119) batting average. This marks his second stint with Oakland, where he compiled a 2-4 record with a 6.18 ERA (35er in 51.0ip) in 27 appearances, including three starts, from 1996-97. In 12 Major League seasons, which includes stops in Kansas City, San Diego, New York-AL, San Francisco along with Colorado and Oakland, Witasick has compiled a 29-40 record with a 4.60 ERA in 321 career appearances, including 56 starts.
The 29-year old Byrnes was batting .266 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 59 games for Oakland this season, including 52 starts (44 in left field, 2 in center field, 2 in right field and 4 as the designated hitter). He had started just 13 of the A's last 30 games heading prior to the All-Star Break. In his six seasons in Oakland, Byrnes batted .270 with 45 home runs and 164 RBI in 442 career games.
Quintanilla, who was selected as a compensation pick following the first round (33rd overall) of the 2003 First Year Player Draft, was batting .296 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 78 games for Double-A Midland this season.
Earlier today, the A's acquired outfielder Jay Payton and cash consideration from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handed reliever Chad Bradford.
