OAKLAND -- The Oakland Athletics announced Monday the club has agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Justin Duchscherer on one-year contract for the 2007 season, avoiding arbitration.
Duchscherer posted a 2-1 record with a 2.91 ERA in 53 relief appearances and notched a career-high nine saves last season. He issued just nine walks in his 55 2/3 innings of work, an average of 1.46 per nine innings, which was the third-lowest mark in the American League. It was also the seventh-lowest single-season mark in Oakland history and the lowest by a pitcher not named Dennis Eckersley. Duchscherer was 9-for-11 (81.8 percent) in save opportunities and allowed just three of his 22 (13.6 percent) inherited runners to score on the season. He missed 42 games from May 7 to June 23 while on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right elbow.
A's pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on Friday, Feb. 16 with the first workout scheduled for the next day. The remainder of the squad will report on Wednesday, Feb. 21 with the first full squad workout set for Feb. 22. The A's will open Cactus League play on Thursday, March 1 against the Milwaukee Brewers in Maryvale. The team's annual FanFest is set for Saturday at McAfee Coliseum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
