OAKLAND -- The Oakland A's today placed outfielder Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right thumb and recalled infielder/outfielder Eric Patterson from Triple-A Sacramento.
Patterson joins the A's for the second time this year as he was previously with the club from July 27 to 29. He went 0 for 10 with three walks in three starts in center field and then batted .304 (14 for 46) with a home run and seven RBI in 11 games with Sacramento following his option on July 30. The 25-year old left-handed hitter was acquired from the Chicago Cubs along with right-handed pitcher Sean Gallagher, catcher Josh Donaldson and outfielder Matt Murton in exchange for right-handed pitchers Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin on July 8. He was assigned to Sacramento following the trade and hit .330 with four home runs and 19 RBI in 25 games overall with the River Cats. Patterson has a .324 average overall at the Triple-A level and also batted .237 with one home run and seven RBI in 13 games over three stints with the Cubs. He has appeared in 12 games in left field, two at second base and one in center field in the majors and 68 games at second base, six in center field and two in right field in the minors.
Sweeney goes on the DL for the second time this year as he was also on from May 29 to June 12 with a left toe contusion. He was batting .287 with four home runs and 37 RBI in 88 games with the A's and ranked fourth among American League rookies in batting average. Sweeney also missed three games from June 27 to 29 with a sprained left ankle and three games from July 11 to 13 with a dislocated left pinkie.
The A's have now used the disabled list 21 times this year, which is one short of the Oakland record of 22 that was set in 1992 and matched last year. Oakland has had at least four players on the DL every day since May 14 and at least three every day since the start of the 2007 season. The 21 players on the DL have combined to miss 652 games. Last year, A's players combined to miss 1259 games while on the DL.
