OAKLAND -- The Oakland Athletics today raised $116,750 on A's Breast Cancer Awareness Day, presented by Olay Skin Care, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society and Northern California Cancer Center. Over the past 10 years, the Oakland A's Breast Cancer Awareness Day has raised over $1,000,000 for breast cancer education and research.
Funds were raised through the sale of special ticket packages, commemorative pins and hats and an A's autographed quilt raffle.
Pre-game ceremonies included over 500 Bay Area breast cancer survivors forming a symbolic human ribbon on the field in dedication of hope and survival and the release of white doves as a symbol of hope.
In addition, as a part of "A Gift of Faith" grant, the A's will donate $5,000 annually to a local charity in memory of longtime KTVU Channel 2 reporter, the late Faith Fancher. This year's grant will be presented to the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center during the pre-game festivities. The new state-of-the-art facility is devoted to providing exceptional care to patients and is destined to become the preeminent breast care resource for women in the East Bay.
Additional sponsors of this year's A's Breast Cancer Awareness Day included Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, Contra Costa Times, Chevron, Comcast, Ghirardelli Chocolate, Ross Dress For Less, Olay Skin Care and State Roofing Systems.
