OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's traded infielder Jack Hannahan to the Seattle Mariners for right-handed pitcher Justin Souza, the club announced today. Hannahan, who was on the A's 40-man roster, was playing for Triple-A Sacramento. Souza is not on the 40-man roster and will report to Double-A Midland.
Hannahan batted .193 with a home run and eight RBI with the A's. He was recalled from Sacramento on April 24 and appeared in 52 of the A's 58 games before he was optioned back to Sacramento on June 29. The 29-year old left-handed hitter was batting .222 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 21 games with Sacramento.
Souza was 6-6 with a 3.35 ERA in 20 games, 14 starts, with Double-A West Tenn and ranks sixth in the Southern League in ERA. He allowed a .247 opponents batting average and issued just 18 walks in 78.0 innings while striking out 62. The 23-year old right-hander was originally drafted by the Mariners in the ninth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. He pitched mostly in relief prior to this year, going 12-11 with seven saves and a 4.43 ERA in 110 games, eight starts, in three seasons.
