News and Notes About the A’s Upcoming Homestand

A’s Host Red Sox and Mariners; Bay Area BBQ Challenge and A’s BeerFest Set for Saturday

A’s Promotions: This homestand features a number of promotional giveaway items including Monday, July 2 when 10,000 fans will receive aMLB Network drawstring bag, courtesy of MLB Network; Tuesday, July 3 when fans are invited down to the field to view thepost-game fireworks show, presented by Round Table Pizza; Wednesday, July 4, when 10,000 fans will receive an A’s red, white and blue cap, courtesy of Wells Fargo; and Sunday, July 8 when 10,000 fans will receive a 1955 Oakland Oaks Cap, courtesy of Cache Creek Casino Resort.

National Anthem Tryouts: Over the past few weeks, fans have been submitting national anthem demos to the A’s in hopes for a chance to perform the anthem live before an A’s game. On Monday, July 2, 12 fans selected from that group will audition live before celebrity judges Kate Longworth of Comcast SportsNet California, Chris Townsend of 95.7 FM The GAME and A’s Broadcaster Vince Cotroneo at 3 p.m., and then one chosen singer will perform the national anthem prior to that night's game against the Boston Red Sox. In addition, every singer selected to audition on July 2 will receive a complimentary game ticket to attend that night's game.

McCarthy Supports Colorado Fire Victims: A’s pitcher Brandon McCarthy will be raising funds for Colorado Springs, which is currently fighting massive fires that have destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced thousands of residents. McCarthy, who attended Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, will be signing autographs behind Section 120 from 6-6:30 p.m. for a $20 donation on Tuesday, July 3 before the A’s game against the Boston Red Sox. There also will be a silent auction that night as well, with all of the proceeds raised to benefit local charities assisting the fire victims.

Fourth of July with the A’s: The A’s will partner with TroopsDirect, an organization that secures much needed basic supplies (e.g. toothpaste, bottled water, food items) to American troops abroad, for the game against the Red Sox on the 4th of July. Ten dollars of every Plaza Level game ticket sold through the special link at www.oaklandathletics.com/troopsdirect will be donated to the non-profit organization. In addition, TroopsDirect will be collecting monetary donations from fans at Gates C and D and behind section 120 during the game and military personnel will be greeting fans outside stadium gates as enter. During a special pre-game ceremony, a swear-in is scheduled, an honored military individual will toss out ceremonial first the first pitch, military personnel will be displaying the large American flag, the color guard will be provided during the national anthem, and a flyover of U.S. Navy jets will take place. 

Comerica Bank Player Appearance: On Saturday, July 7, A’s All-Star pitcher Ryan Cook will make an appearance from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Comerica Bank in Alameda (2416 Central Ave.).

Bay Area BBQ Challenge: On Saturday, July 7, the A’s and Alternative Family Services (AFS) will host the Bay Area BBQ Championship prior to the A’s vs. Seattle Mariners 7:10 p.m. game. The Bay Area BBQ Championship event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Creekside parking lot of the Coliseum and features world-class BBQ sampling from Pro-Am BBQ teams, a BBQ and beer pairing (ages 21 and over), a AAA BBQ cook-off featuring guest tri-tip judge Jonny Gomes (1-2 p.m.), an Oakland Fire Department station vs. station cook-off, a BBQ Throwdown hosted by celebrity personality and author of “NFL BBQ Cookbook” Dr. BBQ, cooking demonstrations, live music and a family boardwalk area. Tickets for the Bay Area BBQ Championship must be purchased online at www.oaklandathletics.com/bayareabbq. A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit AFS, a non-profit organization that has been creating and supporting positive family environments for foster youth since 1978. 

Beer Festival: The 16th Annual Oakland A's Beer Festival will take place on Saturday, July 7 from 5:10-7:10 p.m. in the Eastside Club at the Coliseum. Fans can enjoy over 30 different microbreweries, live music from Bay Area cover band Pop Rocks, and other festivities. Two-time American League MVP and former Athletic Frank Thomas will be present at the festival, as he introduces his new microbrew, “Big Hurt Beer.” Admission to A's BeerFest is free with a ticket to the A's 7:10 p.m. game against the Mariners. A special acrylic souvenir pilsner stein and two microbrew tastings will be available for $10, with additional tastings available for purchase. Beer stein and tasting sales end at 6:30 p.m. and the last pour is at 7:10 p.m. Fans must be 21 years of age or older to purchase tastings.

Turn Back the Clock: The A's will celebrate the 1950s Oakland Oaks with a “Turn Back the Clock” game Sunday, July 8 vs. Seattle. Both teams will don throwback ‘55 uniforms during that afternoon’s 1:05 p.m. game, with the A’s wearing white Oakland Oaks uniforms and the Mariners wearing Seattle Rainiers greys. Special discounts will be offered for day, with Plaza Outfield tickets priced at only $5 and Field Level seats at $19.55. Expected to participate in the pre-game celebration are former Oakland Oaks players Lil Arnerich, Ernie Broglio Don Farber, Neill Sheridan, Joe Kirrene and Tony Rivas, among others. Additionally, 10,000 fans through the turnstiles will receive a 1955 Oakland Oaks Hat, courtesy of Cache Creek Casino Resort.
