The Oakland A's agreed to terms with catcher John Jaso on a one-year contract for the 2014 season, the club announced today.
Jaso batted .271 with three home runs and 21 RBI in 70 games last year in a season that ended July 25 after suffering a concussion. He added 38 walks for a .387 on-base percentage, which was fifth best in the American League among batters with 200 or more plate appearances. The 30-year old made each of his 55 starts (42 at catcher, 13 at designated hitter) against right-handed pitchers, batting .282 with all 15 of his extra base hits, 20 of his 21 RBI and 37 of his 38 walks. Jaso is a .258 career hitter with a .364 on-base percentage in 381 games over five seasons with Tampa Bay (2008, 10-11), Seattle (2012) and Oakland (2013).
Jaso was one of seven arbitration eligible players on the A's roster. The remaining six include Craig Gentry, Luke Gregerson, Jim Johnson, Jed Lowrie, Brandon Moss and Josh Reddick.
