SEATTLE -- Yoenis Cespedes showed off his throwing arm once again, and Willie Bloomquist was ruled out on a close play at the plate in the eighth inning of the Mariners' 6-2 victory over the A's on Saturday, a call that would stand after video replay.
Bloomquist tried to score from second on a base hit to left by Endy Chavez with one out. He was called out by home-plate umpire Bob Davidson on the throw to the plate by Cespedes, with Bloomquist's foot reaching the base right as catcher Derek Norris applied the tag.
"I thought he was safe," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I'm still … no, let me shut up. I thought he was safe."
For Cespedes, it was his Majors-leading 11th outfield assist of the season. A's outfielders have 26 assists, which is second in the Majors and eclipses by one Oakland's season total from 2013.
