Probable Pitchers

Monday, July 6 Go to:

Yankee Stadium | 1:05 PM ET
TOR Ricky Romero, LHP (6-3, 2.85)
Blue Jays (43-41)
  @   NYY Andy Pettitte, LHP (8-3, 4.25)
Yankees (48-34)

Scouting Report:
Blue Jays: Romero is in the midst of a strong run of starts and is carrying a streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings into Yankee Stadium. The young left-hander has gone 4-1 with a 1.91 ERA over his last six starts, during which he has struck out 40, walked 14 and limited batters to a .203 average over 42 1/3 innings. On Wednesday, Romero picked up a win at home against the Rays after logging eight shutout innings in which he scattered four hits and ended with seven strikeouts and four walks. That showing came one start after Romero took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in an outing against the Phillies.

Yankees: Pettitte has pitched well of late, winning his last start against the Mariners on Wednesday. He threw seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. Pettitte did not escape the fourth in Atlanta on June 25 but surrendered just one run in seven innings against the Marlins on June 19. He has now won three of his last four decisions.

Tickets Wrigley Field | 7:05 PM ET
ATL Jair Jurrjens, RHP (6-6, 2.73)
Braves (39-42)
  @   CHC Randy Wells, RHP (3-3, 2.43)
Cubs (40-39)

Scouting Report:
Braves: After routinely encountering bad luck in June, Jurrjens opened July by seeing his no-hit bid against the Phillies end with a two-out single in the seventh. That lone hit didn't prevent Jurrjens from winning for the first time during a four-start span that has been highlighted with a 2.45 ERA. When the 23-year-old right-hander aggressively attacks the zone early in the count, he has found routine success. He has limited opponents to a .240 batting average, but left-handed hitters are batting .296 against Jurrjens. This will be his first career start against the Cubs.

Cubs: Wells won his third game of the season and career by tossing seven innings in a 4-1 win against the Pirates on July 1. He gave up just one run and has surrendered just five runs in his last three starts, winning all three. Wells has faced the Braves once this season, giving up two runs (one earned) in seven innings to get a no-decision. In four home starts this year, Wells is 1-2 with a 3.09 ERA.

Tickets Citizens Bank Park | 7:05 PM ET
CIN Johnny Cueto, RHP (8-4, 2.69)
Reds (40-40)
  @   PHI Cole Hamels, LHP (4-5, 4.98)
Phillies (42-37)

Scouting Report:
Reds: Wild early because of a stiff back, Cueto gritted it out and worked six innings for a 1-0 win over Arizona on Wednesday. He had four walks, all within the first two innings and eight strikeouts. But he allowed just one hit -- an infield single by Felipe Lopez in the third inning. After that, Cueto retired his final 12 batters in a row. Early on the right-hander had lowered velocity but was dialed up to 94-95 mph after he stretched his back out following the second inning. Hopefully for the Reds, this won't be a deeper concern down the road.

Phillies: Hamels put it best when asked about his 2009 season following Wednesday's start against the Braves: "It's a challenging year," Hamels said. "Not every time you go out there, every season is going to be great. You have the years where you really have to learn who you are." Hamels is 4-5 with a 4.98 ERA, and he is 0-3 with a 6.18 ERA in his previous five starts. He said he is healthy, but he has struggled with his command. Whatever the problem, the Phillies are counting on better things from Hamels against the Reds.

Tickets Comerica Park | 7:05 PM ET
KC Gil Meche, RHP (4-8, 4.20)
Royals (35-46)
  @   DET Armando Galarraga, RHP (5-7, 5.34)
Tigers (44-37)

Scouting Report:
Royals: Meche dispelled any doubts that he was fit for his last start, pitching six innings and running up 121 pitches, his second-highest total this season. His velocity appeared strong throughout his stint and he gave up only three runs -- two earned -- but took the loss. If anything, his command was off and he gave up five walks, matching his high for the season. Meche has now lost three straight starts since shutting out Arizona in a complete-game effort. Against Detroit on May 25, he lasted just 2 1/3 innings and gave up four runs -- two earned. That was in KC; in Detroit's Comerica Park he's 5-1 in his career.

Tigers: Galarraga walked a season-high six hitters on Tuesday and lived to tell the tale, pitching his way out of danger to help the Tigers to a 5-3 win over the Oakland A's. "You can't walk that many. You can't," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "That's just the way it is. It's not part of the Major League game." It was Tuesday. Galarraga limited Oakland to one run on two hits in 6 1/3 innings. He had five strikeouts. Galarraga had control problems when he faced the Royals on April 26, walking five. He got out of trouble then, too, allowing one run in six innings to get the win. He'll try for the same result -- maybe with fewer walks, though.

Tickets Fenway Park | 7:10 PM ET
OAK Brett Anderson, LHP (4-7, 5.45)
Athletics (34-46)
  @   BOS John Smoltz, RHP (0-1, 6.00)
Red Sox (49-32)

Scouting Report:
Athletics: Anderson on Monday turned in 5 1/3 solid innings in his first start since June 20, beating virtually the same Tigers lineup that pounded him for nine runs (three earned) over 3 1/3 innings in Detroit on May 15. Given four extra days of rest after complaining of forearm tightness following his previous start, Anderson gave up one run on four hits and four walks while striking out seven to pick up his first win since June 4.

Red Sox: Smoltz was well on his way to victory No. 1 as a member if the Red Sox rotation last Tuesday in Baltimore, but a rain delay shortened the right-hander's outing to four innings. After mixed results against Washington in his season debut, the 42-year-old held the Orioles to one run on three hits in an eventual 11-10 Boston loss. Making his first start of the season at Fenway Park, where he has not allowed an earned run in 20 2/3 career innings, Smoltz is 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA in three lifetime appearances (one start) against Oakland.

Tickets Minute Maid Park | 8:05 PM ET
PIT Virgil Vasquez, RHP (1-1, 3.75)
Pirates (37-45)
  @   HOU Mike Hampton, LHP (4-5, 4.44)
Astros (39-41)

Scouting Report:
Pirates: Vasquez is 2-for-2 in the quality starts department since being called up to join the rotation in what was Ian Snell's spot. Vasquez finished six innings in his last start but allowed three runs to score on two home runs. Though he did have seven strikeouts in first start for the Pirates, Vasquez is not overpowering, relying mainly on his fastball but also on an improving changeup. This will be Vasquez's first career start against Houston.

Astros: Hampton returned from the disabled list in his previous start Tuesday at San Diego and pitched well, holding the Padres to four hits and one run in six innings. This will be his fourth start this year against Pittsburgh, a team he has dominated in 2009 and in his career. He's 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA in three starts against the Pirates this year and 13-3 with a 2.44 ERA in his career. His .813 winning percentage against the Pirates his best against any team with more than one decision.

Tickets Coors Field | 8:40 PM ET
WSH Craig Stammen, RHP (1-3, 5.44)
Nationals (24-55)
  @   COL Jason Marquis, RHP (10-5, 3.87)
Rockies (42-39)

Scouting Report:
Nationals: Through five innings against the Marlins on Tuesday, Stammen was on his game, giving up one unearned run on three hits and retiring eight of nine batters at one point. But sporting a 5-1 lead in the sixth, the 25-year-old rookie gave up a run on a wild pitch, then allowed a two-run homer to Hanley Ramirez to make it a one-run game. After that, a bullpen that came in with the most losses and highest ERA in the big leagues allowed the Marlins to take the lead and gave him a no-decision. Stammen finished having allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts while throwing 73 pitches (47 strikes). This will be his first career appearance against the Braves.

Rockies: The efficiency of Marquis' 3-0 shutout of the Dodgers on Tuesday night was stunning. He threw strikes on 66 of his 86 pitches, didn't walk anyone and held the Dodgers to two hits. He's had strong games pitching without his secondary pitches, like an 8 2/3-inning beating of the Pirates earlier in the season at Coors. But against the Dodgers, he had a cutter to go with the sinker. Marquis will meet the Nationals at Coors, where he is 4-2 with a 4.34 ERA this season.

Tickets Chase Field | 9:40 PM ET
SD Walter Silva, RHP (0-2, 8.86)
Padres (35-46)
  @   ARI Jon Garland, RHP (4-8, 4.81)
Diamondbacks (33-49)

Scouting Report:
Padres: Silva lasted four innings in his last start for the Padres. He exited after surrendering six runs, three earned, in a disastrous fourth inning that led to a 6-1 loss to the Astros at PETCO Park. Silva, who allowed all of his five hits in the fourth inning, walked one and struck out two. Padres manager Bud Black reiterated that Silva couldn't face the blame for a throwing error that led to three of the runs. "He could have wiggled out of there, but the one error came back to bite us," Black said. "His fate could have been different."

Diamondbacks: Garland's winless streak continued on Wednesday against the Reds despite another impressive performance. He pitched six innings and allowed one run on six hits in his sixth consecutive loss. Garland hasn't won a game since May 19, a span of eight decisions. Over that stretch he is 0-6 with a 4.81 ERA. Garland will look to end the slide against the Padres, against whom he is 1-1 with a 3.95 ERA in two starts this season.

Tickets Angel Stadium of Anaheim | 10:05 PM ET
TEX Kevin Millwood, RHP (8-5, 2.80)
Rangers (45-35)
  @   LAA Jered Weaver, RHP (8-3, 3.10)
Angels (45-35)

Scouting Report:
Rangers: Millwood went 6 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs against the Angels on Wednesday. That snapped a string of six consecutive quality starts and raises his ERA to 1.72 over that stretch with a 4-1 record. Millwood has logged at least six innings for the 16th time in 17 starts this season. Against the Angels this season, he has posted a 4.38 ERA in two starts, both in Arlington. The Rangers are 2-0 in those starts. In eight career starts at Angel Stadium, he is 2-3 with a 3.19 ERA over 53 2/3 innings pitched. Millwood threw 104 on Wednesday, the 15th time he's done so in 17 starts.

Angels: Weaver gets a chance to improve upon his performance in Texas on Wednesday night when he was reached for seven earned runs on eight hits and one walk in 6 1/3 innings, striking out three hitters. After surrendering a total of 21 earned runs in his first 13 outings, Weaver has given up 16 earned runs in his past three starts. Weaver is 2-2 with a 3.30 ERA in 11 career starts against the Rangers. He's 5-1 at home with a 1.83 ERA, striking out 48 in 59 innings.

Tickets Safeco Field | 10:10 PM ET
BAL Brad Bergesen, RHP (5-2, 3.53)
Orioles (36-46)
  @   SEA Jarrod Washburn, LHP (4-6, 3.36)
Mariners (42-39)

Scouting Report:
Orioles: Bergesen continued his string of impressive starts, throwing eight innings and giving up just one earned run to pick up his sixth win of the season. He shut down a powerful Red Sox lineup, striking out six batters on 103 pitches. Despite the strong outing, however, the Orioles bullpen gave up a four-run ninth, leaving Bergesen with the no-decision.

Mariners: It was back to the norm last time out for Washburn, who has received the least amount of run support of any starting pitcher in the American League. He held the Yankees to four runs but received just two runs of support and sustained his 105th career loss. Washburn allowed three home runs, the second time in 15 starts this season he surrendered more than one circuit clout in a game and the first hat trick. Washburn will be making his second start against the Orioles this season. He dropped a 1-0 decision to them on June 1 at Safeco Field.

  Tickets AT&T Park | 10:15 PM ET
FLA Sean West, LHP (3-2, 4.06)
Marlins (43-40)
  @   SF Matt Cain, RHP (9-2, 2.48)
Giants (44-37)

Scouting Report:
Marlins: West took a no-decision in his last start despite not having his best stuff as the Nationals tagged him for five runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. The tall left-hander struggled from the start and had trouble with Washington's best hitters as Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman combined to go 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs. West will try to repeat his success against the Giants in his next start. The 23-year-old picked up his first Major League win against San Francisco when he threw eight shutout innings of two-hit ball on June 8.

Giants: Cain is winless in his last three starts, though he has pitched more than capably over that stretch. He received no decision while allowing one run and three hits in eight innings against Texas on June 20, lost at Milwaukee on June 26 while yielding five runs in seven innings and took another no-decision at St. Louis in his last start despite surrendering just one run in seven innings. In Cain's 16 starts, he has been unable to last at least six innings only once, and that was a rain-shortened complete game at Washington on June 4.
