On Tuesday, September 22, A's outfielder Rajai Davis visited Lincoln Elementary School in Oakland. Rajai spoke with the 400 students, where he encouraged them to stay in school. He also demonstrated for the students his baseball techniques with batting, fielding, running bases and stealing bases, even showing some of the signals he receives from his coaches. Sponsored by Comerica Bank, each student received an A's cap and high fives from Rajai. As a special surprise from Comerica Bank and Rajai, each student received 4 game tickets to the Friday, October 2 game versus the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim where their principal John Melvin threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Former A's players Vida Blue and Ray FosseThe Oakland A's annual Community Fund Golf Classic was held on Thursday, June 25, with proceeds benefiting the A's Community Fund, which supports charitable organizations in improving the quality of life for people throughout the Bay Area. The exclusive Castlewood Country Club will host that day. Activities include a long drive contest, exclusive tee prizes, and the opportunity to participate in numerous activities and contests while on the golf course. The event also includes breakfast, on-course BBQ's, dinner, and unlimited beverages all day. The Community Fund Golf Classic is presented in part by Chevron and State Roofing Systems. On September 5, the A's raised $76,690 on Breast Cancer Awareness Day with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society, Northern California Cancer Center, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Over the past 11 years, the A's Breast Cancer Awareness Day has raised over $1,000,000 for breast cancer education and research. Funds were raised through the sale of special ticket packages, commemorative pins and hats and an A's autographed quilt raffle.
In addition, as a part of "A Gift of Faith" grant, the A's donated $5,000 to the Tibrucio Vasquez Health Center in memory of longtime KTVU Channel 2 reporter, the late Faith Fancher. A's Breast Cancer Awareness Day was presented by Olay Skin Care and additional sponsors included Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, Contra Costa Times, Chevron, Comcast, Ross Dress For Less, and State Roofing Systems.
Every Saturday during the 2009 regular season was "Oakland A's E-waste Saturdays" Presented by AER Worldwide. A's fans had the opportunity to recycled an electronics beginning 2-1/2 hours prior to game time and up to game time.
All fans who recycled an electronic item received a 2 for 1 A's ticket voucher for a 2009 regular season A's game.
All material is securely recycled in an environmentally sound manner. AER Worldwide is a Fremont based global company that provides electronics distribution and e-waste recycling services to electronics manufacturers.
Every Saturday and Sunday home game (and select weekday games) the A's Community Fund hosts a silent auction featuring both signed and unsigned A's memorabilia, and game used items. The silent auction is located in the A's Fan Center behind section 120 and ends with the last out in the bottom of the 5th inning. Purchased items are tax deductible.
