Home Run Readers
Community Teachers and administrators can enroll in the Oakland A's Home Run Readers Program to work together in promoting the importance of literacy and encourage reading in the classroom. Help your students set reading goals and work toward exciting rewards.

The California Police Youth Charities (CPYC) is a proud sponsor of the Home Run Readers program in an effort to build relationships between the law enforcement community and California youth.

A's Owner Lewis Wolff and his daughter Kari Wolff read to 5th grade students at Niles Elementary in Fremont.
Students who achieve their goals receive:
  • Free A's giveaways
  • A visit to the school from a member of the A's front office and a police officer from the CPYC.
  • An entry into a drawing to be one of six schools visited by an A's player or coach
  • An invitation to the Oakland A's Home Run Readers Day at McAfee Coliseum
This year, over 17,000 students in 95 Bay Area schools participated in the A's Home Run Readers program. NASDAQ and Exelixis are supporting sponsors of the Home Run Readers program.

Enrollment for the 2008-09 school year will begin in September.

Fitness Sluggers
Community The Oakland A's are launching a unique health awareness program in 2008 to help combat childhood obesity. The A's Fitness Sluggers Program educates children by implementing healthy eating habits and enjoyable physical activity into their daily routine. Children ages nine through 12 can receive a workbook that contains guidelines on proper nutrition and physical activities. The workbook contains an area where children can log their physical activity as well as their food and drink consumption on a daily basis over a four-week period.

Each child who completes the program will receive a special certificate of completion and 100 of those children will be chosen to participate in a pre-game clinic with the A's strength and conditioning coach and will be honored in an on-field ceremony on Children's Health and Fitness Awareness Day to be held on July 12, 2008 against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

A's Fitness Sluggers workbooks can be obtained by stopping by the A's Community Fund Silent Auction table (behind section 120) during all 2008 weekend home games, by e-mailing community@oaklandathletics.com or you can download it by clicking the link below.
